Q&A With Matt

[CWIS'S NOTE] Up today I have a Q&A from Matt, someone who frequents the r/ABDL Reddit thread at throw_away000000004. His answers are well thought-out, and he has some thoughts on the psychology behind the psychology of ABDL. Enjoy... thanks, Matt!

Q&A With Matt
aka throw_away000000004

When did you first realize you were ABDL?
The first time I knew I liked wearing diapers was when I was old enough to intellectually understand what diapers were, and how they felt while I was wearing them. I have never not liked them, from when I was very young, onward. I wet the bed until the time I sort of started puberty, though, and that was about the time that I began to understand diapers in a sexual context.

Do your parents and/or siblings know about you and diapers? If so, please explain how, and how they reacted?
My parents did, and though it was never mentioned to me, I know my younger brother (who did not have any bedwetting issues) did as well. I was never demeaned for it, but it was something that was never spoken about either. No one in the family knew that diapers were sexual for me, however.

Have you dealt with the shame and regret that is the binge/purge cycle? Please explain.
No. I've never felt regretful or guilty about wearing, or using diapers, for any reason. When my parents were trying to potty train me (which I did not cooperate with, I am told), they tried the typical shame/guilt techniques. I was about 5 before I finally gave up diapers other than at night. That said, I've never been especially concerned with what others might think about me, and my interest.
From a fairly early age, I more or less didn't care whether other people approved of what I wanted to do, or whether other people had opinions about my interests. I'm conscious, and always have been, about what other people think or would think. But, to be conscious (and to act so as to avoid offending others or violating social norms) doesn't really imply anything beyond having to navigate the risk of being judged. Even if I was "found out" by others -- and people did, from time to time, figure it out -- I never felt like it was something to be ashamed of.
I think most of what drives the binge/purge cycle, from what I can gather from others, is an internalized feeling of guilt which is the result of believing that others' judgment has some sort of external validity. While I can sympathize with people who feel that way and endure that set of experiences, I think that those who go through the binge/purge cycle would benefit tremendously from taking the time to reflect -- objectively -- on whether real or perceived judgment from others is something they should be allocating time towards considering.
Most of the disapproval of ABDL stuff stems from the "ick" factor that people have, due more often than not to their own insecurity with their own sexuality and sexual interests. So, their expressed disgust for another person's kinks has little to do with whether a kink is objectively bad, wrong, immoral, or something that needs to be corrected. Rather, that expressed "ick" type judgment emanates from the fact that confronting another person's kinks forces the person whose judgment is being expressed to consider -- even if at a subconscious level -- the fact that their own kinks may, too, someday be revealed. Out of fear, they express disapproval so as to hedge against the risk that they might have their time in the sun, as well.
But, psychologically, when a person who hears or perceives that judgment being expressed, and especially from other people whose opinions they respect, the person being judged is unlikely to consider why a person might say "ABDL is gross... totally disgusting" or make a profoundly misguided and idiotic analogy to some type of criminal sexual deviance. Rather, the person being judged is more likely to take the judgment at face value, and internalize it, and find themselves ensnared in self doubt, guilt, and shame. That's all very unproductive... and might in fact drive a person to develop other psychological problems as a result of having to reconcile their desires (ABDL kink) with the fact of others' disapproval. That path is not likely to be fulfilling.

For collegebabies/DLs, did this interest affect your college experiences? If so, how?
In some ways. A lot of the guys I dated, I tried to talk to them about diapers at least. The signs became clear that most weren't interested in even being willing to give it a try. My boyfriend now, who is in college, found me through our mutual interest... hehehe.

How has this fetish affected your social life and/or dating? Married life? Parenting?
It hasn't had a negative impact. I work a highly demanding job, pay taxes, and do my best to do the right thing by others outside of the bedroom.

Some experts believe that we become the way we are because of traumas experienced at an early age, including abuse and/or neglect. Do your life experiences bear this out?
I think most of the "expertise" in that area of research, and the "experts" on the the subject of human sexuality as it relates to kinks, tends to be moralized, normative nonsense resting precariously between pop-psychology and pseudoscience. That is to say, it is emphatically NOT science as the word has meaning in, say, the medical field or in quantum mechanics, or wherever.
There are some things psychology can do very well, like provide insight into what the possible motivations might be for a person doing a particular thing. But a motivation is not, per se, the same thing as a set of life experiences. The example cited above ("we become the way we are because of traumas experienced at an early age") is predicated upon nothing more than post hoc speculation grounded in nothing other than a pop-psych stereotype of what people who are abused as children are like. That is to say, it is not evidence based positive research that is meaningful, valid, or scientifically consequential.
People should be cautious not to confuse the pretense of being "credentialed" with "having the intellectual capacity to say something that is true based on evidence". Peripherally, that's a major problem in psychology more generally. For a raw take on why psychology is in trouble, check out "The Book of Woe". For a good laugh, audit a 101 course in human and/or abnormal sexuality at the local university.

Do your interests involve a subset of this community, such as babyfurs, diaper disciplinarians, wet/messy, sissybabies etc.? Please tell us about it. I won't even try to be specific here; just tell us what you think people should know.
Diapers are not an exclusive fetish for me, nor have they ever been. I've always liked spanking as well, and the more I've had exposure in areas of kinky activities, I've had the chance to develop a better sense of what I like and what I do not like.

What % of your sexual activities and/or masturbation incorporate diapers? Has this caused problems for you?
I don't want to speculate about percentages, but it hasn't caused problems for me.

If you get into the regression aspect of ABDL please tell us more about that. If you do not, and you have feelings about being lumped into a fetish involving it, explain how it makes you feel.
Regression isn't a big thing for me.

Q&A With APaddedGuyJ

[Cwis's Note] Up today I have a Q&A from someone new: James, aka APaddedGuyJ! You might already know James from Tumblr: @APaddedGuy. He is 25 and from the United Kingdom. He's actually on Instagram and Twitter too - check out his contact info at the bottom.

Thanks, James!

Name/Nick: James (ApaddedguyJ)
Age: 25
City/State/Country: Wiltshire, UK
AB/DL/BabyFur/Other?: ABDL

When did you first realise you were ABDL?

Probably when I was around 16, or at least that’s when I first discovered the term ABDL and realised that was what I was. I’d discovered I liked wearing nappies earlier in my life (around 9\10) but it was several years before I realised there was any sort of term or community for it.

What steps did you take to get your diaper 'fix' as a child and/or teen?

When I first rediscovered nappies my parents used to child mind a lot so we often had open packs off nappies in the house. I can remember being curious and trying them when I was around 9 or 10.. I continued to sneak the odd one or two when I could until I out grew the sizes we had in the house.. Then there was a gap of a couple of years where I didn’t have any access until around 14yrs when I started a paper round and used to buy them from the shop I delivered for (I used to lie and say they were for a younger sibling and that I was just running an errand for my parents). It got a lot easier as I got older as I soon discovered the world of online shopping and was soon buying them online, mostly through sites like Amazon. I can remember the first time I ordered ABDL nappies, I only ordered a pack of two from Cuddlz, I think I was 17 at the time, and I was really nervous about them being delivered and my parents seeing it and asking questions.. As it happens I missed the delivered and had to pick it up from the local sorting office but it was still nerve racking.

Do your parents and/or siblings know about you and diapers? If so, please explain how, and how they reacted?

Not that I’m aware off.. If they do then they’ve never mentioned it. I’ve certainly never told them, but I have often thought about it. I make sure to keep it hidden from them, but some days I think life would be simpler if they did.

Have you dealt with the shame and regret that is the binge/purge cycle? Please explain.

Several times. Like many in our community I struggled to accept who\what I was, and through that developed a fear of anyone finding out.. Several times I would accumulate a few ABDL items, such as a dummy and a bottle, but then the fear would get too much or I’d be ashamed of it (I used to tell myself to grow up) and I’d chuck it all out but then a month or two later I’d miss it all and start again.

How has this fetish affected your social life and/or dating? Married life? Parenting?

It’s made things difficult, especially with dating. The social life aspect isn’t to bad as I’ve kept the two separate and don’t tell my friends about it. But that’s not something you can really do from a prospective partner.. sooner or later you have to tell them.. Out of fear of this and how they’d react I’ve always struggled to let people get too close or really get to know me, which as you can imagine makes dating difficult.

Some experts believe that we become the way we are because of traumas experienced at an early age, including abuse and/or neglect. Do your life experiences bear this out?

Not at all, in fact I would say I was very lucky growing up. I had a stable loving family so I can’t say it was down to abuse\or neglect. In fact I would say it was the complete opposite for me, I was the youngest child (of two) and was definitely a mummy’s boy growing up.. I guess my interest in ABDL stems back to those days when I was mummy’s little boy.

For the little dunces, please tell us about what it was like to discover this fetish/lifestyle on the Internet. Please be at least 18 at the time of writing, but be specific about what age you discovered it, what sites helped you, and keep this part PG for obvious reasons.

I honestly don’t know what I would have done if it hadn’t been for the internet! I first discovered the world of ABDL when I was 16. I’d just got my own computer. I don’t remember the first time I searched for it but I do know it was out of curiosity. I had already discovered I liked wearing nappies so googled it to see if it was normal. I was not expecting to find what I did but it changed my life. I remember using sites like RUPadded (yes, I know at the time I shouldn’t have been on these sites being under 18 but hey, I was curious :-), diaperbois and several forums\chat rooms.

Do your interests involve a subset of this community, such as babyfurs, diaper disciplinarians, wet/messy, sissybabies etc.? Please tell us about it. I won't even try to be specific here; just tell us what you think people should know.

In the beginning (I’m sure there’s a famous book that starts like that ;-) hehe) I was just in to ABDL, but the more I’ve seen of this amazing community the more I’ve become intrigued and interested in other aspects of the community; For me it all depends on what mood I’m in.. some days I just want to be a little boy, pad up and cuddle. Other days the whole role play, nappy discipline, control\submission and humiliation side come out. If you catch me on the right day you might even see a Sissybaby side to me. I know one thing for sure, I’m far from having discovered every subset of this community, there’s still a lot to try.

What % of your sexual activities and/or masturbation incorporate diapers? Has this caused problems for you?

As a teenager must of my masturbation involved nappies, either physically or mentally. As Ive got older not so much, the ‘little’ side of me has grown a lot recently so nappies are more a comfort\security thing now rather than a sexual thing, that said I do still have the odd fantasy about them. Ive never incorporated them into sexual activities with others, partly out of a fear of admitting I like them to a potential partner.

If you get into the regression aspect of ABDL please tell us more about that. If you do not, and you have feelings about being lumped into a fetish involving it, explain how it makes you feel.

As I mentioned in one of the questions above, it all depends on what mood I’m in and whether I’m in the right headspace. Some days I totally dig the regression aspect, and want nothing more than to be a little baby boy, safe in my daddies arms. Other days it might be more of a toddler or even older child kinda regression, going back to a time where nappies were an added layer of security, where you still need to be looked after, cared for and loved by a caregiver but aren’t completely dependant on them. Other days I just want to pad up and then carry on with the day as normal. So it all depends on the mood and the day.

IDGAF

Up until recently I thought I was the only person in our community who was absolutely clueless when it came to which manufacturer made which diaper. Thanks to the flood of recent lawsuits, though, I now realize I'm far from alone.

I actually bookmark the 'price of every diaper ever made' charts people post on Tumblr, not so much for the 'price per unit' figures but so I can figure out which company makes which diaper without having to go to all of their respective websites. (At least one or two instantly send you a new *'you forgot something in your cart!'* message anytime you pass by, even accidentally lol.)

Simple? Overnites? Space? Space Cadet? Spacepaws? I honestly forget who made which sometimes. There are so many, and half of them have to be translated from Italian. I usually start to recognize a diaper once I've seen it enough, but sometimes even that fails me. Safari vs. Crinklz? They all have freaking zoo animals... I swear I thought they were both the same diaper, just different generations, for a while.

And please don't get me started on the quality of these things. Which manufacturers are sending out diapers with tapes that don't stick? Which ones are sending out diapers with tapes that pop off? Damned if I know most of the time. Just when I've decided not to buy from 'X' company for a while, voila! Engineering has come up with a way to get the tapes to stick again, or the diaper not to split down the back, or the tapes not to tear off, or the pinholes not to leak, or (insert whatever production issues various companies have through the years here)... and the problem is solved! It's safe to buy again!

But wait, not so fast - it seems if you're buying from some diaper re-sellers, or buying one manufacturer's product from another, or buying diapers in another country, you may be getting *old stock.* Drat! Stuck with the shitty diapers again.

Seriously, until recently being ABDL-diaper-manufacturer-blind was my secret shame. These lawsuits have made me realize there must be many others.

Still, I hope all of these suits are able to be settled in short order, with minimal collateral damage to the community and without any of the companies who service our community suffering significantly. More importantly, I hope that this doesn't turn into something more than a courtroom brawl. I feel like the arrival of the FDA and/or Customs won't be good for anyone. While some of the community clearly have a strong allegiance for or against various diaper manufacturers, mine is to the variety that is created by a strong marketplace with lots of competition.

I'm old enough to remember when the battle for market share of adult diapers was just as fierce, but there were only two major players: Depend and Attends. And while Attends were the obviously superior product, unsavvy consumers kept buying Depend, making it the dominant brand, and leaving ABDLs stuck with nothing but awful light green diapers sold in most stores once Attend sold and stopped manufacturing for a while.

The arrival of ABDL companies onto the scene was very welcome, indeed. The more that arrive, the better for all of us. I hope they change all their fonts, put stickers on their packaging, stop buying from the competitors' factories, [insert whatever other shitty things these companies do in the battle for our diaper dollars] - do whatever else is necessary to keep adorable diapers coming off the line.

I'll be watching the pages of social media just like everyone, waiting for the latest word in ABDL diaper drama from the various *AwwSoCute v Rearz* / *ABU v Tykables* / *Rearz v Everyone* lawsuits we've been seeing of late. But I hope that they are *all* able to be settled quickly, and that each of these companies continue to serve us, and that even more new companies enter the marketplace as time goes on. If there is one thing I love being confused by it's the sheer number of diaper manufacturers, and all of the different diapers, finally available to our community.

At the end of the day IDFAG who made it, or what it's called, or what font is used on the box... if it's cute I'll spend an hour or two trying to sleuth out which site it's sold on, probably eventually buy it, and hope that I don't have to use too much duct tape to keep it on. (Please don't let there be pinhole leaks!) At least this one's not a putrid light green color...

**TL;dr - I felt like I was the only one who couldn't tell a Bambino from a BetterDry until all of these lawsuits came out. I don't so much care who wins or loses as long as all of these companies continue to service the ABDL community with adorable diapers of varying quality lol.**
